Furnishing a Home Office

August 9th, 2010

As more and more people are working from home part-time or full-time, a home office is becoming an important part of any home.  A dedicated space for your home office is important.

When determining what you need for your office, you should start with the space that your office will occupy.  Considerations include the lighting and space size.  Next you have to determine the “must haves” versus the “nice to haves”.

A home office may include some or all of the following:

·         Desk – Find a desk that has enough room for all that you have to do.  You do not want a cluttered, inefficient space in which to work

·         Equipment – Phone, fax, copier, printer, and lamps are all items that you will probably want in your room, so you have to decide where they should be located.

·         File Cabinets – You will probably need one or more file cabinets to store all of your files.

·         Desk Chair – This goes without saying.  You should find a chair that will be comfortable.  After all, you will be spending a lot of time sitting in this chair.

·         Bookcases – If you have room in your office, you might want bookcases for books, reports, binders, etc.

·         Credenza – A credenza is a nice addition to any office, if there is room.  It is a place where you can store items as well as keep your papers organized.

Your home office is a room where you will probably spend a considerable amount of time, so you want it to be a warm attractive space, devoid of clutter and too much furniture.  Make sure that you have what you need, but don’t make it so crowded that you cannot function efficiently.

Outdoor Rooms

June 1st, 2010

Outdoor rooms are becoming more and more popular each year, with many wonderful areas including some type of water feature, patios, pools, play areas for children, hot tubs and decks.  Many of these new rooms include outdoor kitchens and fireplaces.  Outdoor kitchens can be modest or elaborate, featuring a grill area, bar area, sink, refrigerator, dining area and TV.  More and more outdoor rooms are incorporating casual seating areas which include couches and chairs.

One popular type of outdoor seating is a wicker look, which can stand up to rain.  Add waterproof cushions and you have a comfortable casual area for relaxing or entertaining.

Lighting is also an important part of an outdoor room.  You need soft decorative lighting as well as more substantial lighting so that the area can be used during the evening.

Design the area carefully and make sure that you have enough space for all of the features that you want in your new outdoor room.  With careful planning, even if you do not have the budget for all of the areas at one time, you can add the various areas when you have the budget to do so.

Furnishing Your Home for Today’s Casual Living

April 28th, 2010

Today living is much more casual than in the past and many contemporary decorators are choosing to show more casual designs for homes.  The kitchen, as in the past, is a general gathering place in a home.  Many new homes are showing open floor plans that incorporate the living, dining and kitchen areas in one big open floorplan.  This trend lends itself to more casual furniture.

When furnishing a great room and a dining room, it is important to understand how each room will be used.  If the great room is room that everyone congregates in, you have to design it in such a way that it meets the family’s needs.  You want to have enough comfortable seating.  Make sure that you have sufficient lighting for the room.  Choose bookcases, tables and chairs that reflect the style of the room.

When choosing furniture for dining, you have to consider if you plan to use it every day or if you want something more formal.  You might choose a casual set for everyday dining and have more formal furniture for festive occasions.  You do not have to buy sets of furniture.  Pick a table and chairs to suit you.  A side cabinet does not have to be part of a set.  Find pieces that you like.

Bedrooms are also undergoing a transformation.  With the advent of walk-in closets, there is generally not as much furniture in a bedroom.  Night tables do not have to match each other and you might want to furnish the room with other pieces that you have chosen.

All in all, furnishing today’s home is all about what you like.  You are not bound by any rules.   You can mix and match pieces that you like.  Make sure that what you choose fits into the room and will be enjoyed for years to come.
